HOW CAN COUNSELLING HELP ME MEET THE TEAM
Our Specialist NVP & HG Counselling Service
Update 20 November 2023: Unfortunately due to our Counselling service being currently oversubscribed, we have had to decide to suspend referrals to the service until January 2024.
As soon as referrals are open we shall update this webpage and our social media channels. If you have already self-referred to the counselling team before 21st November we will be in touch as soon as possible.
While our referral to counselling service is on hold please do reach out to us if you need support via our helpline and WhatsApp service which you can find details on here.
If you would be interested in accessing counselling elsewhere we have a list of HG-friendly counsellors working in private practice that we can share with you, please email counselling@pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk for more information.
At Pregnancy Sickness Support we provide a specialist counselling service to support women and birthing people who have been impacted by both nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) and hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).
NVP/HG can affect you in many ways and across different areas of your life. We understand that the effects of NVP/HG are not limited to the physical symptoms of the condition and can impact your mental health and well-being, your career and your relationships with others.
While each person's journey will be individual, we know that there are often heavy emotions associated with the condition. We understand that feelings of loss, guilt, depression, anxiety, shame, isolation and loneliness are common, although all feelings and responses are valid.
The impact of NVP/HG may be due to living with the symptoms now or due to the lasting effects of experiencing the condition in the past, even if you did not receive a formal diagnosis at the time.
Experiencing NVP/HG can be traumatic, and in many cases, sufferers do not receive the support and treatment they so desperately need.
Our counsellors are experienced in providing counselling to NVP/HG sufferers and have an in-depth understanding of the condition and how it can impact you.
We provide counselling to women and birthing people whilst they are pregnant and post NVP/HG.
You can access our counselling service whether you experienced NVP/HG 40 years ago or 4 months ago.
We are here to hear you, validate you and support you.
More than 25% of people suffering from HG will have suicidal thoughts, if you need to speak to someone urgently you can call the Samaritans on 116 123 or call 999, or text 'SHOUT' to 85258 to contact the Shout Crisis text line
Key Info:
- We offer up to eight sessions of counselling
- Sessions can be via telephone or online
- Our sessions are priced at £50 per session, however, we understand that this may not be affordable to all. We are passionate and committed to ensuring that all women and birthing people who suffer from NVP/HG have access to mental health support and therefore we offer bursaries to partially or fully cover the cost of your sessions. If this is something you need support with, please ensure you complete the financial details section on the referral form. We can then assess your financial circumstances on a case-by-case basis and offer you reduced rates or fully funded sessions.
The funds generated from these paid sessions are ensuring the sustainability of the service so we can continue to reach every person affected by pregnancy sickness who needs us; helping us achieve and maintain our service aim.
If you have any questions about our service or are waiting for your referral to be responded to please don’t hesitate to get in touch at counselling@pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
